Flyers Cup: Catron Doubles Up, Sends DMA To Finals

Newark, Del. — Despite failing to convert on their first 27 shots of the game, the Delaware Military Academy Seahawks clicked in the final three minutes of their Flyers Cup semifinal matchup against Salesianum on Wednesday (March 13), upending the two-time Flyers Cup champions for the second time in a week, this time by a 2-1 margin on the shoulders of a pair of Aaron Catron goals.

Catron, who potted the equaliser for DMA amid a net-front scrum with 2:42 left in regulation, came back 44 seconds later to give his Seahawks the lead. After being dismissed from a face-off just above the Salesianum blue line, Catron — now lined up at left wing — received a headman pass from Braedon Dougherty up the boards after Lukas Cook won the draw, and his wrist shot from just inside the left dot soared over freshman goalie Henry Annone’s glove to put the Seahawks in front.

Following a timeout with 1:58 left in regulation, Annone was pulled in favour of an extra Salesianum attacker, however the Sals failed to recover despite a 6-on-4 attack through the final 35 seconds with DMA’s Alex Maglio having been assessed a tripping minor.

Anthony Guerrieri saved 19 of 20 shots he faced in net for DMA, with Ethan Scharp’s rebound put-back at 12:33 in the first period the only Salesianum goal he allowed. Annone saved 29 of 31 shots on goal in defeat.

DMA will play for the 2019 Flyers Cup on Sunday morning (March 17) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia; game time is 11:30 a.m.
