‘Hockey For A Cause’ Enters Second Decade

Newark, Del. — The 11th renewal of the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with Intellectual disABILITIES’ (DFRC) Hockey for a Cause, featuring four high school hockey teams based in the First State, is slated for Friday, Dec. 14 at Fred Rust Arena on the University of Delaware campus.

The foundation, a philanthropic cornerstone of Delaware since 1956, is dedicated to raising funds and awareness to support and enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities.

“We emphasize abilities,” says Dr. Tony Glenn, executive director of the DFRC. “We believe that every life that comes into the world is sacred. It comes with power and meaning. We look at the person first, not the disability. DFRC understands that by helping others, all of our lives are enriched, not just the people we are trying to help.”

The first half of the charity doubleheader features Appoquinimink and Delaware Military Academy squaring off at 5 p.m., while the second game pits Salesianum against longtime rival St. Mark’s. Both games will air on Delaware Hockey Night Radio.

Leading up to Hockey for a Cause, players and coaches from all four teams will host a “buddy night” at the Patriot Ice Center in Newark, Del. Teams will invite their “buddies” onto the ice for a shared experience, passing pucks, taking shots on goal, and giving the student-athletes a direct hand in the mission of the DFRC.

Tickets for the doubleheader are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Additionally, silent auction items will be available and 50-50 drawings and “Chuck-a-Duck” contests will take place through the course of the evening. All proceeds will benefit the efforts of DFRC, which has distributed over $6.2 million into Delaware programs designed to benefit and empower Delawareans with intellectual disabilities to maximize their potential and independence. In its first decade, Hockey for a Cause has raised over $64,000 toward DFRC’s mission.

“We look forward to expanding the goal of ‘abilities first’ with the game as we move forward,” concludes Glenn.
