Newark, Del. — Appropriately enough on Senior Day, members of the Class of 2019 accounted for four of the University of Delaware women’s hockey team’s six goals — including Emily Hockey’s game-winning tally with just over a minute to go — in a 6-5 win over Rowan on Saturday afternoon (March 9) at Fred Rust Arena.
Hockey, who tied the game for the Blue Hens 4:51 into the second period after Rowan established a 2-0 first-period lead and blueliner Callan Small put the Hens on the board with a power-play goal 1:21 into the frame, secured victory for Delaware with 1:09 remaining in regulation off an assist from fellow senior Carlie Smythe.
Senior captain Mary Claire Newtown also scored for the Blue Hens, as did Kaelen Speck and Kendall Dubin. Smythe’s primary assist on Hockey’s game-winning goal was one of her three on the day, while twin sister Kendall recorded 23 saves in victory.
Cassie Gravelle led Rowan with a hat trick, Juliana David and Danielle Felicioli scored a goal apiece, and Emily Render saved 35 of 41 shots faced in defeat.
The Blue Hens, who concluded their regular season with a 17-5-1 record, will take part in the College Hockey East playoffs this weekend in Johnstown, Pa.
