NEWARK, Del. — Many Jr. Blue Hens teams were in action throughout the weekend of Nov. 11-13 across the region. Recaps of submitted games follow below.
Johnson, 12AAs blank Cougars
On the strength of a 24-save effort from goalie Luke Johnson, the U12AA Blue Hens shut out Chester County, 3-0, on Sunday morning at Gold Arena.
After a scoreless first 28 minutes, the Blue Hens reeled off a pair of power-play goals straddling the second intermission — David Lavieri with one at 13:01 in the second period and Hudson Kurtz adding another 4:50 into the third. Alex Over scored the Hens’ third goal in the final minute of play, set up by Jackson McNutt on a two-on-one attack.
18As split weekend at Aston
The U18A team earned a split in EJEPL action at IceWorks, in Aston Pa., defeating the Westtown Quakers twice, 5-1 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday, while falling to both the Exton Kings, 7-3, and the New York City Cyclones, 5-0.
Caleb MacKenzie led the team with five goals on the weekend, including a hat trick against the Quakers on Saturday. Joey Scarborough added three goals, and six other Blue Hens accounted for one each. Tristan O’Connor compiled a 2-1-0 record in net, while Luke Bordley saved 27 Exton shots in defeat in his lone appearance.
10Bs routed by Bears
Despite only icing nine skaters, the Hershey Jr. Bears kept their undefeated DVHL record intact, improving to 10-0-0 with a 7-1 victory over the Blue Hens’ U10B team on Sunday at Gold Arena.
Weston Darmstadt scored the lone Delaware goal off an assist from Ryan McCoury early in the third period, foiling the shutout hopes of Bears’ goalie Ashton Sweeley. Sweeley, though, had ample support in front of him, as Gavin Schmelz notched a hat trick for Hershey and Cole Burger recorded two goals and three assists.
14AAs fall to Genesis
In a penalty-laden match Saturday at Gold Arena, the Jr. Blue Hens U14AA squad were outpaced by Genesis, falling 9-4 in DVHL play.
The Blue Hens briefly led midway in the first period, after goals from Easton Hines and Justin Silver gave them a 2-1 advantage over Genesis. However, the Hens’ adversaries used a four-goal second period to put themselves out of reach, led by a three-goal effort from Ryan Montagna and two from Kaden Gunning.
Enrique Boyd and Ryan Roth accounted for the other Blue Hens’ goals. Dylan Morrison and Garrett Cushman split time in net for Delaware in defeat.
