Jr. Blue Hens

JBH Weekend Recap: Dec. 3-4

NEWARK, Del. — Many Jr. Blue Hens teams were in action this past Saturday (Dec. 3) and Sunday (Dec. 4). Recaps of reported games follow below.

Improving U18As split weekend

After coming up a goal short of the Westtown Quakers in a 6-5 defeat Saturday, the improving U18A Jr. Blue Hens squad bounced back for a 6-4 win over Genesis Sunday.

Tyler Firlein had the hot hand for the Hens on Saturday, potting two goals. But a four-goal first period from the Quakers — including two goals from Bobby Brydges — proved too much for the Delaware side to overcome.

Patrick Fasano registered a goal and an assist, and Cam Rogers added two assists. Luke Bordley stopped 22 of 28 shots in defeat.

On Sunday, the Hens flew out of the gate, posting three rapid-fire goals in the first 9:24 to establish control of the terms, forcing Genesis to burn their time out early. Nineteen seconds after the Genesis time out, Colin Regan scored his first of two goals, and both sides effectively traded goals from that point on before Caleb MacKenzie sealed victory for the Blue Hens with his second goal of the game in the final :57 of regulation.

Tristan O’Connor was victorious in net for Delaware, stopping 26 of 30 shots.

The Hens are currently fifth of eight in the DVHL U18A table, sporting a 4-8-2 record with seven games remaining. They are an even .500 through their last five games (2-2-1), with both losses coming by one and two goals, respectively.

U10s split on the road

The U10 Blue Hens earned a weekend split after defeating Chester County, 6-3, at Cleveland Arena on Saturday and falling to Hershey, 7-2, at Hersheypark Arena on Sunday.

Aarav Parmar and Cash Scarborough netted two goals each for the Hens in Saturday’s come-from-behind win, which saw them put up four goals in the third period after trailing 3-2 through two. Ryan McCoury added a goal and an assist.

On Sunday, the Blue Hens were kept largely silent by a strong Hershey squad, with Jordyn Long’s two goals Delaware’s only offensive activity.

At 7-5-1, the Hens are fifth of 11 in the DVHL U10B table with seven games to go. They travel to both Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Exton this weekend for their first of two meetings with both the Jr. Penguins (7-5-1, 6th) and the Kings (6-8-1, 7th).

U14AAs fall to leader Snider

The U14AA Blue Hens put up a respectable showing against DVHL division leader Snider Hockey (9-2-0), but fell 4-2 on Saturday morning. Brennan Austin and Sean Callaghan scored goals for Delaware while Garrett Cushman recorded 23 saves on 27 shots in defeat.

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held in memory of Snider player June Dorsey, who was killed in a motor vehicle collision Thursday.

Delaware, last of six in the DVHL U14AA division at 2-9-0 with nine games left, travels to Central Penn (8-3-1, 2nd), Chester County (3-10-0, 5th) and Genesis (5-4-1, 4th) to conclude 2022.

Loudoun sweeps U12s

The Loudoun Knights swept Delaware’s U12 team Saturday in EJEPL action, dropping a 6-3 decision in the afternoon before falling 7-2 in the evening.

Luke Johnson manned the Delaware net for both games, recording a combined 56 saves between the two games. Jackson McNutt (goal, assist) and David Lavieri (2 assists) were the only Delaware players to record multiple points across the series.
