State College, Pa. — The University of Delaware women’s hockey team (1-1-0 ACHA) opened American Collegiate Hockey Association play with a weekend split at the Pegula Ice Arena, falling to Penn State’s Division 1 team, 3-2, Friday night (Sept. 21) before defeating Ohio State, 2-0, Saturday (Sept. 22).
After Penn State and Delaware traded goals in the second period, newcomer Kendall Dubin converted on a Mary Claire Newtown feed to put the Blue Hens up 2-1 just 25 seconds into the third. However, a pair of late goals by Crosby Deliman lifted the Lions to victory, with the game-winning tally coming with one minute remaining in regulation.
In defeat, Kendall Smythe (0-1-0) saved 38 of 41 shots faced.
The Blue Hens bounced back on Saturday night with a 2-0 triumph over the Buckeyes. Newtown and Sunny Breen both contributed goals for Delaware, while freshman netminder Morgan Cullen (1-0-0) registered a 32-save shutout.
