Newburgh, N.Y. — A powerful second period propelled the University of Delaware Division 2 men’s hockey team (4-0-0) to a 4-3 victory over Army (0-1-0) on Sunday evening (Sept. 23) in what was arguably their toughest task so far this season.
Tied 1-1 through one, the Blue Hens pounced on a power play early in the second period. Shawn Camisa, who assisted Mike Leather on a first-period goal, beat Army goalie Jack Kraus off an Andrew Marciniak feed 1:39 into the second period before leading scorer Ryan Morse and top face-off man Devin LeBlanc later contributed goals to lift the Hens to a 4-1 advantage.
Luke Schneider brought the Black Knights within two in the closing minute of the second period, and the third period proved a scoreless struggle until Jaxon Jones halved Delaware’s lead with 17 seconds to go.
Eric Birnberg stood tall in net for Delaware, stopping 26 of 29 shots faced while Kraus registered 27 saves on 31 shots.
Delaware returns to Fred Rust Arena on Friday (Sept. 28), when they host Montclair State University to kick off a three-game homestand. Game time is 7:05 p.m.; live coverage from Delaware Hockey Night Radio will begin at 6:45 p.m.
