Newark, Del. — It was Delaware domination across the board Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) as the Blue Hens women’s hockey team on the University of Maryland at Fred Rust Arena.
Delaware outshot, outscored and outplayed Maryland, resulting in a 5-0 shutout for freshman goalie Morgan Cullen. It was the first of her collegiate career.
Anna Schell got the Blue Hens off to a scoring start at 15:1o into the first period off a feed from Carlie Smythe, who followed up with Delaware’s second goal of the first period two minutes later. The assist and the goal brought Smythe up to 99 career points.
Delaware senior captain Mary Claire Newtown scored the only goal of the second period, unassisted, at 6:38. McKenzie Schurman was called for interference with 45 seconds left in the period during a net-front battle over the puck, Delaware’s first penalty of the game. The Hens outshot the Terps 10-5 in the second period.
As a result of the Schurman penalty, the third period began with Maryland on the power play, one of four they were unable to capitalize on. Newtown and Kendall Dublin were then both called for body checking at 3:47 and 4:46 respectively, but the Hens killed those penalties off as well.
Maryland goalie Riley Chadwick failed to stop an easy shot from Delaware’s Sunny Breen, who was assisted by Schurman, at 9:05. The goal drew the only timeout of the game, called by Maryland, though it failed to wake up the Terrapins, as Shannon McDermott scored the Blue Hens’ fifth goal of the game just 35 seconds back into play.
The Blue Hens advance to 2-1-0 in ACHA play and will face Maryland again Friday (Oct. 5) at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md.
