ACHA D3: Stony Brook Surges Late, Upends UD, 4-3

Newark, Del. — After a strong first 40 minutes, the University of Delaware Division 3 men’s hockey team (0-1-0) gave up four unanswered goals in the third period and dropped their season opener to Stony Brook (4-1-0), 4-3, at Gold Arena on Friday night (Sept. 28).

Despite only fielding ten skaters, the first-year Stony Brook Division 3 team found their footing early in the third period and figured out Delaware goalie Gabriel Nadell. After Nick Scafidi lifted the Blue Hens to a 3-0 lead 1:21 into the final frame, the Seawolves turned the tables not even a minute later. After Nicolas Schlegel notched an unassisted goal, he assisted Colin Roye and Michael Kosina on a pair of rapid-fire tallies in the sixth minute. The two sides exchanged failed chances through the next 10 minutes while tied at three goals apiece, but Kosina recorded the game-winning goal for Stony Brook with just 3:23 remaining in regulation.

Brandon Rathwell, victorious by way of a 34-save effort, was a key component to Stony Brook’s strong third period, making some masterful glove saves to backstop the visiting Seawolves. Nadell recorded 28 saves for the Blue Hens in defeat.

Delaware returns to action at home on Friday (Oct. 5), facing off against Maryland.
