Downstate Recap: Ice Dogs Edge Stars In OT

Harrington, Del. — After the Delaware Stars 16A power play unit accounted for two second-period goals to establish the lead, the Hatfield (Pa.) Ice Dogs fought back to secure a 3-2 overtime win in a penalty-laden contest on Sunday morning (Dec. 2) at the Centre Ice Rink.

A physical and testy first period resulted in 44 penalty minutes being doled out between both sides, and the Stars, despite outshooting the Ice Dogs 15-5 in the initial frame, were unable to score until the first minute of the second period. Gavin Schwartz connected off a T.J. Polisano assist, and Polisano beat Ice Dogs goalie Alex Carson on an unassisted power-play goal at 6:02 to double the Stars’ lead.

The Ice Dogs came roaring back, with goals from Ben Mostoller at 14:17 in the second period and Rex Fowler at 8:30 in the third to tie the game at two. A double minor assessed to Polisano for cross-checking and unsportsmanlike conduct with 28 seconds left in regulation ultimately opened the door for Ryan Gregg’s overtime game-winner for the Ice Dogs, as he connected from a Sean Hawthorne assist 2:30 into the extra period.

Carson recorded 33 saves in victory, while T.J. Marcellino notched a 19-save effort for the Stars in defeat.

In downstate Delaware High School Hockey League action, the Harrington Havoc (1-4-1) ended up on the losing end of an 11-10 shootout to the DuPont/Conrad Tigers on Saturday night (Dec. 1) at the Centre Ice Rink when the Tigers’ Steven Boyles potted his sixth goal of the game at 12:34 in the third period.

Nate Cunningham led the Havoc with two goals.

The Havoc next take on Middletown on Saturday evening (Dec. 8) at the Patriot Ice Center in Newark, Del.
