Six different members of the University of Delaware Blue Hens Division 2 men’s hockey team (16-10-0) found the back of the net in Sunday afternoon’s (Jan. 14) 6-1 rout of the North Carolina Tar Heels at the Raleigh IcePlex.
Defenceman Dylan Knox opened the scoring 9:04 into the first period, beating Tar Heels goalie Chris Bakolia off a Billy Jenkins assist. RJ LaSpina extended the Hens’ lead to 2-0 with 4-1/2 minutes remaining in the first, teaming up with new linemate Kyle Sapia.
After Joseph Baglio scored the lone goal for North Carolina 1:13 in the second, the Hens unleashed a flurry of shots on Bakolia, resulting in four Delaware unanswered goals. Bottom-six forwards Justin Grossman and Shawn Camisa both scored for Delaware in the middle frame, while Ryan Morse teamed up with longtime linemates Stephen Bryson and Ryan Lowe for his 18th goal of the season in the final minute of the period.
After much of the third period was scoreless, defenceman Eddie Martorella earned his second goal of the season at 17:48 from a Jeremy deWit assist. For deWit, it was his second assist of the game and eleventh of the season.
Freshman Derek Nash remains perfect on the season in net for Delaware, earning his sixth win with a 17-save performance. Bakolia recorded 43 saves on 49 shots.
The Blue Hens travel to the Commonwealth of Virginia next weekend, facing off against the Virginia Tech Hokies at the Berglund Center (formerly the Roanoke Civic Center) on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 20) before a Sunday morning (Jan. 21) rematch with divisional rivals Liberty at the LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg, Va.
